Cristina DEVA

Using imagery with themes and subjects easily found in our surrounding reality, Cristina Deva projects new images through an experimental working process. Employing Polaroid photography, she manipulates the form and color of the photographic image by injecting pigments, which undergo structural chemical changes as they interact with the developing
substances. Thus, the images resulting from this empirical process – elaborated with the meticulousness and instruments of a chemist in their laboratory – emerge as series of original works, both in form and color.

Owing to the execution process, based on multiple trials, and especially to the final aspect of the works, we can confidently state that this project continues the visual explorations of the movement defined in the history of Romanian art as Experimentalism. Here we refer to the experimentalism of the 1970s–1980s, when a number of artists sought to bring to public attention artworks created with unconventional materials and techniques.
