“The pub is one of the most important institutions of our civilization, far more important than, say, parliament. In one place wounds are inflicted, in the other they are healed.”
— Béla Hamvas
🔴 The wine tavern 🍷, the pub, is a place where opposites meet, alliances are formed, and where quiet conversations and sometimes stormy events take place. It is also often a space for contemplation and reflection. For a long time, Csaba Kozmakis and I have dreamed of a wine tavern where the vita contemplativa — the contemplative life — could be nurtured with the help of paintings.
🔴 Sometimes a neutral space is necessary; occasionally, it is useful to be surrounded by nothing that conveys deeper thoughts. Yet we must admit that wine is never neutral — it is more like the oil of the imagination’s delicate machinery, making it the perfect companion for paintings.
➡️ The title of this exhibition signals that the selection on display does not carry any particular message; the works are here simply because this is currently their best place. They represent themselves, both individually and collectively.
